Happy Birthday Block Magazine!

Volume 3, Issue 1

Back-to-School Issue!

September has arrived and one of the hottest Augusts on record has finally come to a close. The school doors have once again opened to the delight of parents everywhere and the Kool Man trucks head back to the garage, closing their windows for the winter. As you squeeze a few more weeks out of those short sleeve shirts and those dinners in your favorite gardens we hope that you will take a few moments to enjoy the abbreviated September issue of Block Magazine (we’re waiting for the full staff to return from their much deserved summer break). Be sure to check out the October issue for more diverse coverage of the neighborhoods.

You might notice that this is Volume 3, Issue1 of Block Magazine celebrating the third year of serving and observing Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick. Block Magazine is proud to have become such a valued part of your lives and over the past three years we have strived to be the best possible resource for the community. We now move into our third volume due to the help and support of so many local businesses, advertisers, organizations, residents, writers, and artists that believe in the community and Block Magazine’s coverage of it.

As Block Magazine continues to grow we look forward to supporting and sponsoring many more events and organizations. This month be sure to check out the Williamsburg Jazz Festival and the Jezebel Music Singer-Songwriter Showcase which Block Magazine proudly sponsors.

Block Magazine’s third birthday will bring with it a great third volume and we look forward to celebrating many more birthdays in the future. Thank you for your dedicated support and encouragement. Block Magazine is a reflection of you and the North Brooklyn community.

Together we publish, together we flourish!

We are always here to listen and learn and we appreciate your thoughts and feedback about Block Magazine and the community. You can always reach us at www.blockmagazine.com.

See you on the streets!

Broadway Concrete Raises Concern
Letter sent by Block Magazine reader Adrienne

Broadway Concrete located on Kent Avenue between North 3rd and 4th Streets is currently a major polluter of our neighborhood. Their factory blows clouds of gray dust containing silica into the air and allows water and slurry to run off and clog the city’s catch basin. Their trucks dump concrete on the street, violate traffic regulations, and spread gravel and concrete dust on local streets and cars. While they have a legal right to operate their factory in our neighborhood, their practices are in flagrant violation of environmental laws.

If you are concerned about working or living near Broadway Concrete and witness any of the above illegal practices please call and complain to the following agencies. Let them know they are not conducting their business with “Good Health Keeping” and that they are “Breaking the Law.”

Department of Environmental Conservation – NY State
Attention Sam: 718.482.4888 or 718.482.4900

Attention Matt: 718.875.5200, extension 14
